Reibo Aoki Biography

Reibo Aoki

Like some of the finest shakuhachi players in Japan, this man is part of a family dynasty which began with his father Aoki Reibo I, who passed along not only his name and shakuhachi style to his son, but also the leadership of the Reibo-Kai Shakuhachi Guild in 1975. The younger Reibo performs in both contemporary and traditional Kinko styles of shakuhachi music. He is particularly well known for his performances of the composition "Shika no Tone," recorded in duo with Goro Yamaguchi. Reibo II first began touring abroad a few years before assuming leadership of his father's guild. This was a 1973 Japan Foundation tour of North America and Europe. More recently, he performed in China in both 1996 and 1997, as part of a program arranged by the Japanese Cultural Exchange Society to promote friendship between the two great nations. He has released more than a dozen albums, including the award-winning Take Ippon on Crown records. He is also an active teacher, his students including Anglo shakuhachi players such as Elizabeth Bennett and Allen Steir. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
